Spelling Bee Cheese Board

If there is one thing I love more than cheese, it's language. Specifically, I'm fascinated with words and their historical and cultural origins. I was a linguistics major in school, where I dreamed of being a lexicographer.  Every year, I look forward to my favorite television event of the year, the Scripps National Spelling Bee. To celebrate, I made a solo Friday night of the event with a thematic milk n' honey cheese board.

Spelling Bee Cheese Board
The cheeses:

Baby Caprino - this is a goat cheese made by a kid! Young Chrissy Omo from CKC Farms (Blanco, TX) creates goat cheeses and her Baby Caprino, a camembert-style goat cheese is awesome. I shaped it into a honeycomb shape as best I could.

Hopelessly Bleu drizzled with wild Texas guajillo honey. Hopelessly Bleu is one of my favorite cheeses,  which I first had at my cheesy birthday picnic.  This first batch of the season from Pure Luck Dairy (Dripping Springs, TX) came out a bit salty, but the honey cut the saltiness and it turned out great.

Barely Buzzed from Beehive Cheese Company (Unitah, UT). This popular cheddar is rubbed with coffee and lavender and packs so much flavor. It is lovely.

SeaHive from Beehive Cheese Co. (had to go with the theme!). This is their newest release, a cheddar rubbed with honey and sea salt. Unlike all the other cheeses, I bought this one at Whole Foods. Don't tell the Dairymaids!

I complemented my cheese board with Fra'Mani Salametto, a Slow Dough Bakery baguette, and an apple. I really wanted honeycomb on my cheese board, but was told that it wouldn't be in season for another two months or so.

The cheesy words from the spelling bee:

turophile: a gourmet of cheese : a cheese fancier (from the Greek tyros meaning cheese)
Liptauer: a spicy Slovak cheese spread
talmouse: a pastry shell with a filling of cheese
caciocavallo: a cheese originating in southern Italy and made from matted curd worked in hot water or whey and often molded into the shape of an Indian club or tenpin

The most exciting part of the bee for me was the interview segment with Arvind Mahankali, a 10 year old from Queens, NY. His favorite word is turophile (which just happen to be on the word list) and he LOVES cheese. He tied for third place. I will be rooting for him next year!

Perfect Friday Night!
