My Grandmother's Cheese Board

My grandmaman Simone passed away in 2009.  She lived in Quebec and Maine all her life and only spoke French. During her long life, she took care of my sick grandfather, their 6 kids, and raised cows on a dairy farm. She was a real life dairy maid! She was always kind to her 15 grandchildren and I adored her. She was the reason I took French in school and I often wrote her letters.  She was a wonderful cook and always fed me cheese curds and oatmeal cookies (not together, that's nasty).

My mother recently went on her annual summer trip to Quebec with her sisters.  During this trip, she helped clean out a storage space which held my deceased grandmother's remaining things.  She pulled out a cheese board and questioned if it even belonged to her mamere.  My Aunt Lise exclaimed yes, it absolutely belonged to her. My grandma didn't take it out very often, but sometimes during holidays or when she had company.  My mother asked for it, and my Aunt Francine sent part of it to Texas when she couldn't fit it in her suitcase.

My mother gave me the cheese board, complete with a cheese knife and cover. I am beyond touched. It's petite and adorable just like my grandmaman!
